Thinking about going back to college?

Written by Mike on May 15, 2008 – 4:02 am -

Earning that “piece of paper” can make a huge difference in your personal or professional life.  This could be the only incentive you need to help you make up your mind about whether or not to attend college.
Whatever the reason is that motivates you, you should think about your reasons for going to college.  What do you want to do with your life?  What career path do you desire?  How will college help you get there?
If you are returning to college, you should have a pretty good idea about why you are returning, with a definite goal in mind.  Keep in mind that you have been out of the school arena for a while and you just might find that your current situation is a bit more challenging, such as being married, having kids, or even having a job.  You might discover that the time and commitment needed to complete your college education and balance your current responsibilities will be quite frustrating.

However, it is good to know that going back to college has never been easier.  Most colleges and universities now offer campus childcare, re-entry student services and flexible course schedules.  You can take classes one night a week or on the weekends or even in an accelerated format.  Students can now complete their degree program online or through correspondence courses.  Everyone who wants to go to college should be able to arrange it.

If you are a high school senior going directly to college after graduation, the process will be a bit different and quite a bit easier.  You will have the advantage of your high school preparing you for your SATs, giving you college information, and guiding you through the process.  School counselors can help you identify what you expect from college.  You   will need to think about what interests you and think about what you’d like to be doing for work, the rest of your life.  You might even consider vocational testing and counseling which should be offered through your high school.
